Kama La Mackerel

Kama La Mackerel is a Tio’tia:ke/Montreal-based community organizer, movement builder, writer, poet, story-teller, curator and multi-disciplinary artist whose work focusses on narration and cultural production as modes of anti-colonial resistance. The medium of Kama’s work ranges from performance to textiles, from story-telling to print, from poetry to photography and film. Kama is the co-founder of The Qouleur Festival, an annual arts festival and healing space that celebrates the art and lives of queer and trans people of colour in Montreal, and is also the founder and hostess of GENDER B(L)ENDER, Montreal’s unique monthly queer open stage. A femme supreme who is haunted by the ocean, Kama is very actively involved in different grassroots social justice movements and organizing around anti-racism, migrant justice, gender justice and trans mobilization. Kama was born in Mauritius and first migrated to India as a young adult before moving to Tio’tia:ke/Montreal in September 2011. Check out more of Kama’s work at:

Kama La Mackerel est une artiste multi-disciplinaire, écrivain, militante, poète, queer, trans et racisée basée à Tio’tia:ke/Montreal​. Sa pratique est axé sur la narration et la production culturelle comme modes de résistance anti​-coloniale. L’étendue d​e sa pratique varie de la performance aux textiles, des contes à la sériegraphie, de la poésie à la photographie et le film. Kama a co​-​fondé Qouleur, un festival artistique annuel qui célèbre l’art et les vies des personnes queer et trans racisées de Montréal. Kama est aussi la fondatrice et l’animatrice de GENDER B(L)ENDER, la seule scène ouverte queer de Montréal. Kama est très activement impliquée auprès de différents mouvements en​ justice sociale et milite beaucoup autour de l’antiracisme, la justice migrante, la justice d​u​ genre et la mobilisation trans. Kai Cheng Thom

Kai Cheng ThomKai Cheng Thom is a writer, spoken word performer, and therapist based in Montreal, unceded Kani’enkehake territory.  A little Chinese trans grrl with a big, lipsticked mouth, she brings poetic fire to pages and stages alike.  She has performed work at venues including Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and Verses International Poetry Festival alongside artists including Kama La Mackerel, Ivan Coyote, and d’bi young.  Her poetry has appeared in Matrix Magazine, ditch poetry, Where the Nights Are Twice As Long: Love Letters of Canadian Poets, among other places.  Her essays on race, sex, gender, and mental health have appeared in xoJane, Buzzfeed, Autostraddle, and Everyday Feminism, where she is a regular contributor. Kai Cheng also holds a Master’s degree in mental health social work, and is the co-founder of Monster Academy Montreal, a radical mental health collective for youth.
